How to Pray When You Don’t Know How To Pray

Praying is hard. I struggled for years with praying. After I had accepted Christ no one had ever really sat down with me and taught me how to pray. Of course, I heard people praying a lot, but I felt that my prayers always fell short. I’m sure you know the feeling. The really cool thing though is that His Word makes it so simple.

One of the things I see in Scripture is that we can pray His Word back to him.

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call to him while he is near. Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, so he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will freely forgive. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return there without saturating the earth and making it germinate and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so my word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.”

Isaiah 55 6-11 (CSB)

So while it is hard, the Bible makes it ever so simple to. Memorize a couple of verses to pray when you struggle. It’s one of my best coping skills.

Another method I learned is the “A.C.T.S” prayer.

Reminds us to tell God all of the things we adore about Him. I would challenge you to learn the attributes of God. Adore him for His Creation. Adore Him for what he has done for you.

I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. I will boast in the Lord; the humble will hear and be glad. Proclaim the Lord’s greatness with me; let us exalt His name together.

Psalm 34:1-3 (CSB)

Here we pray and confess our sins to The Lord. We ask for forgiveness. Also, it may be appropriate to ask the Lord to bring to mind other people that we need to confess to and ask for forgiveness from them as well.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 (CSB)

Then we can come to The Lord and pray a prayer of Thanksgiving. We take time to acknowledge that the Lord is good and we thank him for the blessings he’s given us.

Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Phillipians 4:6 (CSB)

This is where we pray for the things we need and want. First we want to praise the Lord, confess and thank Him for all he has done. THEN, we want to humbly ask the Lord to provide and He promises in his Word that he will provide our every need. Keep in mind that what we ask of Him should align with His Will.

This is the confidence we have before him: If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears whatever we ask, we know that we have what we have asked of him.

1 John 5:14-15 (CSB)

Also, a disclaimer. Never take my word for anything, I’m no theologian. Anything I post should be compared to what the scripture has to say. I always pray before I write that The Spirit would speak through me. I challenge you to open your Bibles and see for yourself. The Lord will bless your study.

with love, Jenn

  1. Beautiful post! When I’m not sure what to pray I use the ACTS method you mentioned above! Such a great guideline to go off of Even as a missionary I feel as though my prayers fall short of others. Thankfully, God doesn’t compare our prayers the way us humans do! He just looks at our hearts
